What is the best way to find foclosure homes for sale in IL?

no offense to the first answerer but i wouldnt do that. Those sites charge you a monthly fee to see what they have. better yet i would only use those if i didnt want to do the research myself. Foreclosures are public record. find the cities official website and search for ';lis pendens'; (latin term used for foreclosures). You'll find tons of files and addresses. then search for the propery appriaser for your county...stick the address in there and it will tell you the owner's name. Then you can negotiate directly...without a montly fee, without commission for a real estate agent. I would mail the current own a letter and let them know you are interested, ask them to call you if they are. they have a very limited time to act so if they are interested they will say so. There is also a book or two or more on this. here is my fav although i dont follow it exactly, it even gives letter samples: The Pre-Foreclosure Property Investor's Kit: How to Make Money Buying Distressed Real Estate Before the Public Auction
